Muhurat Trading 2021

Date Published: November 2, 2021

Introduction

Deepawali, the Festival of Lights is celebrated as the New Year in many parts of India and the world and marks as an important time for new beginnings.   Muhurat trading is the auspicious stock market trading for an hour on Deepawali. Muhurat Trading is a symbolic and old ritual that has been retained and observed for ages, by the trading community for more than 50 years now.  Traders consider it a good omen to do token trading on Laxmi Pujan day of Deepawali to propitiate Goddess Lakshmi, the Indian goddess of wealth and prosperity, for her blessings throughout the year.   It is believed that Muhurat trading on this day brings wealth and prosperity throughout the year. This year’s session would mark the advent of Samvat 2078 according to the Vikram Samvat calendar.

History

The history of Vikram Samvat Calendar dates back to 57 BC when India’s great King Vikramaditya defeated the Sakas from Iran.  This marked the beginning of a new calendar, the Vikram Samvat Calendar.  The Gregorian calendar started 57 years later.  Before the introduction of the new financial year (as per the Gregarion Calendar), Vikram Samvat was one of the calendars followed by Indians.  According to this calendar, Diwali marks the start of a new financial year. Though Gregarion calendar  is now predominantly followed all over the world, Vikram Samvat calendar is still being used in countries like Nepal as well as certain Indian states like Gujarat and Maharashtra predominatly by the trader and  merchant community.  This is one of the reasons why Deepawali is considered to be auspicious in India especially in these communities.

Relevance

Deepawali is not only a time for gifts and sweets but it has also become customary for investing in gold and silver as well as stocks.  Traditionally many stockbrokers native usually to Gujarat and Northern Maharashtra perform the Chopda Puja to honour and worship their books of accounts.  It is a practice among these traders and merchant community to open a  Khata book  on the Laxmi Pujan day, which is maintained to the next Laxmi Puja.  This practice is also being followed by customary traditional brokers following paper trading.

People who want to start their investment journey in stock market or a regular trader who wants to begin the New Year, all use this Muhurat trading opportunity to trade in stocks. It is now more of a tradition and culture to do Muhurat trading during Laxmi Puja.  The stocks are purchased with the objective of passing the wealth as a heirloom to the next generation and not just for trading alone. Markets during Muhurat trading are kept open for 1 hour on the day of Laxmi Puja as per the astrologically defined auspicious moment of the day.

This year Muhurat Trading Window will be open on November 4, 2021 from 6.15 pm to 7.15 pm.
